In this article it is discussed the configuration of the rural primary school in the State of São Paulo, in the period from 1889 to 1947. Based on the examination of the classification principles adopted by the management bodies of the school - teacher training level, duration of primary education, coverage of educational programs, location of schools and educational proposals - it is discussed in the study about the production of the difference between the urban and the rural primary schools and the definition of specific educational proposals that consolidated an identity for rural schools beyond the spatial location.
