Abstract

Assessment policies and regulation of higher education are part of the set of systemic transformations changing the world of higher education since at least the second half of the eighties. This paper attempts to analyze in a comparative perspective it development in Latin America and the Caribbean.To this end, it reviews some of the main conceptions of academic and institutional assessment, the agendas of various actors on the issue and the institutional forms adopted in the region. It also presents the contributions of research made by the specific field of comparative higher education policies. The paper concludes identifying a new phase of systems of quality assurance, where the regionalization and the convergence of systems as well as external evaluation of institutions internal systems are key to promote new forms of quality assurance.
