The purpose of this paper was to present a brief report about the progressive expansion of the models of relationship between external and internal dimensions of the school and the student performance. Until the 1970's, studies were done based on the positivistic approach to explain the school performance of students from the analysis of input and output variables. From the 1970's, the introduction of the qualitative research approach in the study of the school process led to a broader understanding of the internal factors of the student performance. From the 1980's, the renewed acknowledgement of the importance of quantitative research on the external and internal context of the school, in order to determine its effect on the student performance and the specific effect of the school on this result, acquired new relevance.
