The objective of this paper is to analyze the historical trajectory of the Brazilian university, ha having as its guiding principle the elitism of higher education. With this purpose, we analyze the late emergence of the university in Brazil, the proposal devised by those who created it, the changes it has undergone, the brief period of popularization and, finally, the attacks on it for the purpose of privatizing it, reserving it to a small “intellectual elite”.
