This text aims to systematize the use of teaching cases as a theoretical and methodological element in research on teacher education in the context of the stricto sensu graduate program. The study, of an exploratory and documentary nature, takes as its locus of investigation the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) and the CAPES Theses and Dissertations Catalog, considering that both databases concentrate productions of postgraduate programs. The first stage of the study identified 264 theses and dissertations, which went through analysis of titles, abstracts and keywords, consolidating 36 researches that were, effectively, the corpus of analysis of the investigation. The 36 works were analyzed in full, with the purpose of carrying out an integrative synthesis covering the following axes of discussion: theoretical references; aspects that constitute the methodology; and, results of investigations. Publications were identified from the year 2001 onwards, with the majority of research taking teaching cases as an instrument of investigation and training, generally associated with other instruments. In those studies in which teaching cases are central to the object of study, their potential for formation and contribution to the professional development of teachers are explored. It also highlights the need for research in the field of teacher training to further explore teaching cases as a training element, since these are configured as possibilities to promote effective reflection on the teacher's action.
