Abstract

The aim of this article is to introduce Popular Education in Latin America, its most important achievements and how it has been constructed in the Brazilian context. It also aims to present a “what-to-make” of this Education, based on dialogue and collective knowledge construction. In order to do that, this paper presents a synthesis of the literature and a general historical and thematic scenario on the Popular Education from 1960 to 1990. This article treats some of the points to be considered on knowledge construction and Popular Education practices, trying to contribute to its conceptual accuracy and methodological delineation. The following items were discussed: social transformation; autonomy and knowledge exchange; educator’s formation - its methodological processes and thematization problems; the educator’s role, as well as action, reflection and evaluation strategies when considering this knowledge theory’s limits and possibilities. This work intends to contribute to the development studies in the area of education, concerning mostly the urgent need for initiatives, academic or not, which focuses on strengthening the different processes of humanization.
