Abstract

GONCALVES, Mauro Castilho. Pedagogic Crusade by New School and action of the Catholic Educators in Rio de Janeiro (end of the 1920s). Educação. UNISINOS [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.3, pp.279-287.  Epub May 16, 2019. ISSN 2177-6210.  https://doi.org/10.4013/edu.2018.223.06.

The article analyzed the Educational Carioca Movement named Pedagogical Crusade by the New School, lead by Catholic intellectual Everardo Backheuser in the context of the State Teaching Reform in Rio de Janeiro, under the managing of Fernando de Azevedo at the end of the 1920s.The study aims at comprehending the levels of adhesion and autonomy registered by the movement, especially related to the established policies by the Teaching Reform. The research, based on the notions of a net of intellectuals, connections, and cultural support, evaluated the articulation of elementary school teachers from a Catholic thesis expressed in pontifical documents, specialized literature and periodic press. Results indicated that circles of Public Teaching, under the leadership of Backheuser, took their chance on the enforcement of a Catholic urban ethos able to guide school actions in a fierce educational debate.
