Abstract

PIOVEZAN, Patricia Regina. The precariousness of the teaching work in Portugal. Educação. UNISINOS [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.4, pp.250-258.  Epub May 17, 2019. ISSN 2177-6210.  https://doi.org/10.4013/edu.2018.224.02.

The aim of this article is to analyze the educational reforms carried out in Portugal since the 1990s and its operationalization in order to increase the precariousness of teaching work. Since the end of the 1980s, when Portugal joined the European Economic Community, under the guidelines of the agreements signed with the International Monetary Fund and, consequently, the privatizations, the implementation of a series of political-economic and labor reforms led to the expansion of work precarious. For the purpose of this analysis, we privilege two elements that constitute the precarious work of the teaching category: the flexible forms of contracting and the salary tightening. In this study, we used bibliographical research, documental and semi-structured interviews. We noted that in the last 27 years the application of several laws contributed to the expansion of the precarious work of Portuguese teachers, especially in relation to temporary contracts and wage cuts.

Keywords : precarious teacher work; flexibleness; wage squeeze.
