The article deals with historical aspects of the formation and professionalization of teachers in the Guaporé-Mamoré Valley, on the Brazil-Bolivia border, discussing singular issues in that context: black women who pioneered the educational pastoral activity of Dom Rey, a Catholic bishop from France was concerned with the educational assistance of the populations that were on the margins of state action. It results from bibliographical and field research based on memories of the protagonists, covering the decades from 30 to 60 of the twentieth century. Schooling made it possible for those women to have access to other rights that require the understanding of the codes of writing, producing significant transformations in their lives and that of other people. Without any apology, it can be said that the school made it possible to professionalize numerous people who lived without prospects of social inclusion, such as those black and riverside women from the Guaporé-Mamoré Valley, region of Rondônia.
