ZUBARAN, Maria Angélica; VARGAS, Juliana Ribeiro  e  BAHIA, Cristina Camaratta. Producing and Educating Black Women in the Newspaper O Exemplo: between the home space and the right to education and emancipation (Porto Alegre, RS). Educação. UNISINOS [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.1, pp.189-206.  Epub 13-Jun-2019. ISSN 2177-6210.  https://doi.org/10.4013/edu.2019.231.12.

The article investigates the cultural representations and cultural pedagogies about women carried by the writers of the Black Press Periodical O Exemplo, in the theoretical perspective of the Cultural Studies in Education. This is a cultural analysis, based on documentary research in the digital collection of the aforementioned newspaper. It analyzes, particularly, editorials and columns that deal with women between the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century, in the immediate post-abolition period. Among the results, we highlight two possible directions of women´s teachings in this periodical: a more traditional one, which sought to restrict women to home, housework and children´s education, and a more progressive one, in favor of women´s right and their access to education and emancipation. These cultural pedagogies were disseminated through different narrative strategies: from one side, the humorous language, in poems that criticized customs considered undesirable and, on the other, the language of praise and exaltation of qualities understood as ideals in the context of post-abolition.
