The article discusses playing as an intense social practice of early childhood in the context of early childhood education and its learning potential for life. It had as theoretical contribution authors like Brougère and Freire. From a qualitative approach, we used the participant observation of free play moments provided in educational practices with a group of 14 children with an average age of 3 years in a municipal infant education institution. The data were recorded in field diary and the analysis was performed, considering the qualitative perspective considering the literature. The results pointed out, among other aspects, that in playing children, they expand the play repertoire, make choices, share ideas about reality, negotiate toys and establish friendships. Playing is a social practice that promotes learning for life and, therefore, must be present in the daily life of children in Early Childhood Education.
