Abstract

This paper approaches strikes of teachers from public schools in Rio Grande do Sul, between 1979 and 1987. By means of Oral History methodology, the objective was to observe impressions of a group of teachers concerning their experiences as strikers; as well as to discuss their understandings, through the analysis of memories and lapses emerging from the interviews conducted with them. The documentation analysis enabled to infer that these women were affected by discourses which prevailed at the time, and, as a result, they could construct mobilizations in defense of public schools. It was not a homogeneous movement; while, on the one hand, none of them was indifferent to the strike-related causes of that period, each one of them reconstructed their own memories of those experiences, considering their roles of individuals that occupied places in the past and occupy other ones in the present. It is possible to observe that the respective historical period strenghthened these teachers who, in a certain way, left the overfeminization of teaching practices and assumed another condition concerning the status of their profession.
