Abstract

VAHL, Mônica Maciel; ARRIADA, Eduardo  and  NOGUEIRA, Gabriela Medeiros. AUTHORITARIANISM AND HOPE: SEWING THREADS BETWEEN PAULO FREIRE AND JOSÉ CARDOSO PIRES. Práx. Educ. [online]. 2021, vol.17, n.47, pp.4-23.  Epub Feb 18, 2022. ISSN 2178-2679.  https://doi.org/10.22481/praxisedu.v17i47.8698.

This article analyzes the novel “The Dolphin” (In Portuguese: O Delfim) by the Portuguese writer José Cardoso Pires, based initially on Paulo Freire, considering the concepts: authoritarianism, hope, limit situation and unprecedented viability. The intersection between literature, philosophy and education has enabled a greater understanding of the social and societal conflictive relations, thus expanding the spectrum of analysis and reflections. In the novel under analysis, the residents of Gafeira - a fictional village where the story is set - live in an inert, drowsy, immobile and even oppressive state. The occurrence of a crime changes the story’s course and the order of social relations. Establishing a metaphor with the lizard, the writer/narrator shows the impermanence of what seemed consolidated; that is, the power relations between the aristocracy and the peasantry are undone. Operating with the Freirian categories: ingenuous conscience, oppressor/oppressed, and with several aspects addressed in the novel, it is evident that the collective organization and the awareness of the “unemployed” allow overcoming the condition of the oppressed. The creation of the Cooperative of the Ninety and Eight is a concrete example of this. The text demonstrates that the works of Pires and Freire, even in different languages, different experiences and distant realities, elucidate forms of oppression and structures of power, reveal the blemishes, the violence and the abuse by the elites.

Keywords : José Cardoso Pires; Paulo Freire; Limit situation.
