This paper reflects on the foundations and reasons for being of the school library, considering a model of formative education and, from this perspective, examines Law No. 14,837/2024, with an emphasis on the conception of a library that supports the implementation of the National School Library System, especially with regard to its relevance for Education. To this end, the assumptions of formal education as a right and necessity are exposed; then, the principles that support the school library are explored; Finally, the Law is discussed, highlighting its limits and problems, based on what a school library should be. It concludes that the conceptual distance between Education and Librarianship lies in the centrality of the challenges that arise for libraries to exist and function in schools.
