The text undertakes a reflection on the concept of cultural formation [Bildung] which pervades and is pervaded by the creation of the German Educational System. In this regard, it is divided in three periods:1) ascertainment of the possible translations for Bildung in Portuguese; 2) presentation of the concept formulation in the German intellectual scenario; and 3) description of the historical conditions that have made this a key concept for the process of German educational reform and for the pedagogical thought as such.
