Abstract

CENCI, Angelo Vitório  and  CASAGRANDA, Edison Alencar. Education for democracy between human self-sufficiency and vulnerability. Conjectura: filos. e Educ. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.3, pp.478-495. ISSN 2178-4612.  https://doi.org/10.18226/21784612.v21.n3.02.

The paper takes Martha Nussbaum as a reference to address the classical tension between human self-sufficiency and vulnerability and discuss the implications of such tension in the field of education for democracy. The notion that education for democratic living depends on how that tension is conducted in educational processes is defended. Thus, considering that both vulnerability and self-sufficiency are intrinsic to the human condition, the education for democracy relies on the growth of moderate self-sufficiency in the search for a meaning to human vulnerability. Such growing shall, then, lead human vulnerability towards some self-sufficiency that will not lose sight of the fragility of human good living.

Keywords : Vulnerability; Self-Sufficiency; Human Condition; Education for Democracy.
