Conjectura: Filosofia e Educação

This paper aims to discuss a set of enunciations, concerning school Mathematics, of a group of 16 students in the final year of evening High School, in a public school located in the Taquari Valley, in the south of Brazil. Qualitative, the research made use of interviews achieved by means of focal group technique, having as theoretical contributions some foucauldian tools, also discussed by their commentators. The research material was generated in five sessions, with an average of one hour long each one, in the school. The analysis of the research material allows to deduce that, for them, Mathematics, on the one hand, continues with the nickname of the "Queen of Sciences" because it serves as a support for other areas of knowledge. On the other hand, they emphasize the importance of one of their specific contents, Financial Mathematics, in the school curriculum of High School because, from this perspective, getting to know and master its rules is indispensable especially for those who want to undertake. Such results can encourage the problematization of two issues. The first one points to the importance of giving voice to students, especially on issues linked to the school curriculum in High School. This is not a matter of relieving the school from their duties, but of hearing students concerning their expectations regarding school contents; the second issue goes back to the idea of the school functions in contemporary times, considering the demands and needs of the labor market and the economical and social promotion for all students.
