The paper articulates some concepts of ethics and political philosophy to think about the refugee crisis. What it means to tolerate and welcome are questions that we seek to investigate in order to shed light on the field of problematization of ethics and politics. If plurality is the fundamental condition of politics (Hannah Arendt), the concept of ethical alterity (Emmanuel Levinas) should function as a device for a consequent interpretation of the current state of our ethical-political engagement. The concept of birth, which in Arendt underlies political action, is appropriate to affirm an ethics and a policy of acceptance and to indicate the limits of a supposed ethic of tolerance.
