This text has as goal to analyze the textbook Fundamentos de Educação of Amaral Fontoura seeking to understand the production of the author and the prescriptions intended for normalists, in the time between 1949 and 1957. The period on screen corresponds, respectively, to the 1st and 4th edition of the book. The textbook has in its 4th edition 342 pages and analyzed the elements of texts and paratexts. (GENETTE,, 2009). As for the texts, the index was composed of 19 chapters and 2 annexes. With regard to the paratexts, it was possible to verify elements such as: cover, list of works produced by Amaral Fontoura, for the collection “Biblioteca Didática Brasileira”, dedication, opinion of the secretary of education and culture of the state of Rio de Janeiro, presentation of the collection, and its organization in four series, in addition to a prior notice. A copy of the 4th edition (1957) of Amaral Fontoura’s textbook Fundamentos de Educação was the primary source of this research. In order to better understand the compendium in question, Decree-Law 8,530, of January 2, 1946, Organic Law of Normal Teaching. The study was based on the following authors: Chartier (1990), Julia (2001), Choppin (2004), among others. The analysis of Amaral Fontoura’s textbook Fundamentos de educação allowed us to understand, in part, the curriculum of the Normal Schools in the 1940s and 1950s in Brazil, through the cross-referencing of the data presented in the textbook and in Decree-Law 8,530, of January 2, 1946, Organic Law of Normal Teaching. Fundamentos de educação is an integrated book that presents content from three disciplines: Fundamentos de Educação; Metodologia; and Administração Escolar, always with emphasis for the state of Rio de Janeiro.
