Abstract

ROSSETTO, Miguel da Silva. The formation of the self and socratic mastery in Pierre Hadot. Conjectura: filos. e Educ. [online]. 2019, vol.24, e019033.  Epub July 31, 2020. ISSN 2178-4612.  https://doi.org/10.18226/21784612.v24.e019033.

The goal of this essay is to retake the vital importance that the ethical formation of the subject has when facing the fragile and vulnerable condition of the human being. This purpose is here thought from Pierre Hadot’s reading of Ancient Philosophy and, mainly, in the figure of Socrates. We propose to investigate the notion of “Socratic dialogue” as a spiritual exercise that makes oneself the creator of his own formation. Thus, dialogue can be understood as a pedagocial-formative principle sufficiently efficient to shift concern with knowledge to the concern with the subject of knowledge. Without this displacement, the ethical formation of the subject becomes fragile.

Keywords : Human formation; Dialogue; Spiritual exercise; Ethical formation.
