Abstract

The city of Rio de Janeiro was characterized, during the 1920s, by the implementation of some government actions that attempted to undertake an interlacing of the preventive, educational and correctional dimensions with the actions of urban improvement. The article, based on analysis of educational legislation, regulation of social assistance, reports of police chiefs, requests sent by the Diretoria Geral de Instrução, periodicals and photos, discusses some of the justifications that were firmed during the period that aimed to emphasize the potentials contributions that the disciplining of the behavior of the population would contribute for the organization and harmonization of the architectural structure and its social uses.
