Abstract

PINHEIRO, Maria de Lourdes  and  MENEZES, Maria Cristina. Pragmatism and idealism: the debate between catholics and pioneers in Brazil in two books of the 1930s. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2015, vol.19, n.45, pp.127-139. ISSN 2236-3459.  https://doi.org/10.1590/2236-3459/42100.

In the 1930 the Brazilian educational discussion took place between two opposing groups, who used the book as a strategic device aimed to disseminate or censure pedagogical concepts with the intent of consolidating a particular school model. In this context and a cultural-historical perspective, this paper presents a discussion of two printed collections pedagogical that circulated in Brazil: Democracy and Education by John Dewey (1936) and The Philosophy of Education from the democratic point of view, by Herman Harrell Horne (1938).

Keywords : pedagogical collections; strategy; practices; school model.
