Abstract

SOARES, Jefferson da Costa. JOSEPH HERMAN’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO BRAZILIAN EDUCATION IN THE IMPERIAL PERIOD. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.54, pp.318-333. ISSN 2236-3459 .  https://doi.org/10.1590/2236-3459/66425.

This study is based on a biographical research on Joseph Herman, The Barão de Tautphoeus, an acknowledged educator in the Brazilian Imperial period, but that still does not have further studies about his peculiar trajectory. Being of German origins, he was not only a professor from Colégio Pedro II, as he founded and directed other educational institutions of the Court city and several other cities. The methods used consist in documental analyses of sources founded in the Núcleo de Documentação e Memória do Colégio Pedro II and also in journals at that time. We emphasize the importance of the professor and sustain that it may have been responsible for the entrance, in Brazil, of ideals from the movement of pedagogical renewal that occurred in Europe in the XIX century.

Keywords : Barão de Tautphoeus; trajectory; teacher professional identity.
