Abstract

This article is a historical approach about the family’s investments for entry and stay of their sons and daughters in boarding schools at the Imperial Court of Rio de Janeiro (XIX). The education provided in boarding constituted in privilege of some social classes or social positions of wealthy families, segments that could meet the boarding school expenditures. Family investment with the internment of their children corresponded mainly to the payment of tuition or board (food and lodging), outfit preparation and payment for the use of boarding utensils. Investment in education in boarding schools was a reproduction strategy by the wealthy classes for keeping social position and expectations laid on future generations.
