Abstract

FORTUNATO, Ivan  and  PORTO, Maria do Rosário Silveira. FROM A. S. NEILL’S INSPIRATIONS TO THE 100 YEARS OF SUMMERHIL: FREEDOM, SELF-GOVERNMENT AND HAPPINESS. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2023, vol.27, e125048.  Epub May 20, 2023. ISSN 2236-3459.  https://doi.org/10.1590/2236-3459/125048.

This paper was written on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the British Summerhill School. Founded by AS Neill, in 1921, under the triad freedom-self-government-happiness, the school has maintained this philosophy, by defining that only children, free, responsible for their personal and happy attitudes can transform the world into a place best. This is a literature review through which it is intended to recover Neill’s inspirational sources, found in Ian Suttie, Homer Lane and Wilhelm Reich, articulating them with his own perception of education. The intention, upon unveiling as Neill's bases, is to promote a necessary (and urgent) discussion about another school, common bases aimed at a less oppressive and freer world.

Keywords : education; self-government; happiness; freedom.
