This text considers the first years of the so-called Movement of Modern Mathematics - MMM. Specifically, it analyzes a reference work for the training of teachers in the first school years, aiming to verify the transformations resulting from the MMM. As theoretical tools for analysis, studies on the construction of textbook biographies in terms of the studies by Pais (2010); Valente (2008) and Choppin (2004); are used, anchored in the perspective of Cultural History (CHARTIER, 1990), in terms of uses and appropriations. What elements of modern mathematics are present to be taught in the first school years contained in the Manual Pedagógico para a Escola Moderna, guiding the training of teachers in the first school years? In response, the study concludes that this work is an important reference for the analysis of a period of transition from references to teacher training, peripherally incorporating new contents, without changing the organization of arithmetic from the period prior to the MMM.
