Abstract

MARTINS, Marco Aurélio Corrêa  and  LEONARDI, Paula. The Santa Leopoldina Asylum of Niterói and a Public-Religious Action for Women's Education (1850-1878). Hist. Educ. [online]. 2024, vol.28, e133370.  Epub May 30, 2024. ISSN 2236-3459.  https://doi.org/10.1590/2236-3459/133370.

The aim of this article is to discuss the disputes surrounding the creation, maintenance and administration of the Santa Leopoldina Asylum in Niterói, an institution created by provincial decree in 1850. These clashes provide an opportunity to think about the disputes surrounding the education of poor girls. From the creation of the Asylum, through its administration by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary to its departure and hand-over to the Sisters of Charity, it is possible to observe the relations between conservative and liberal politicians and between Church and State, the focus chosen for the analysis. The study was based on the reports of the presidents of the Province of Rio de Janeiro, on periodicals of the period and on documentation of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It consisted in analysis of the sources supported by bibliography, trying to highlight the temporality of the constitution of the asyltic institution under the point of view of education and schooling.

Keywords : Santa Leopoldina Asylum; public power; religious congregations.
