The objective was to describe the historical trajectory of nursing education in Sergipe, a period between 1949-1975. Periods between the advent of Law 775 that demarcates the regulation of nursing education in Brazil and the decree authorizing the creation of the undergraduate nursing course at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS). The theoretical assumptions are supported by cultural history, where practice and social culture are constituted. The methodology was historical documentary analysis, through textual documents, and oral history, through the narrative of a graduate and a teacher. The article concluded that the nursing professionalization process was founded on the advent of law 775 and, in the course of improving nursing care techniques and practices, the scientific field was consolidated with the creation of the UFS nursing course.
