Abstract

CUSTODIO, Renato da Silva  and  SANTOS, Ademir Valdir dos. The School Subject of Chemistry in the Province of Santa Catarina: 1850’s. Hist. Educ. [online]. 2024, vol.28, e135715.  Epub Dec 31, 2024. ISSN 2236-3459.  https://doi.org/10.1590/2236-3459/135715.

It analyzes the constitution of Chemistry as a school subject in the Province of Santa Catarina during the 1850s. Reports from the Presidency of the Province and the press are used, together with references on the historical processes of creation and functioning of a school subject. The results show that Chemistry emerged in Secondary Education through the action of Lutheran teachers, specifically in the Liceu (Lyceum), in an environment of conflicts between Catholics and Conservatives and the provincial presidency, the administrative entity that attributed to that institution the scientific training of youth for progress, in opposition to the Christian humanist tradition. We also detected that in the Provincial Library there was material with Chemistry content, which can be linked to other knowledge related to this science present in manuals and books circulating in Brazil in the 19th century.
