This article analyzes the process of preparing the statute and career plan for teaching in Suzano/SP. The objective is to verify how public policies for valuing teaching at a national level are present in local policies. The methodology adopted was a case study with an emphasis on documentary research, using town legislation, national legislation on teaching careers, as well as international documents as sources. As a conclusion, it is highlighted that, although the formation of a working group, with the function of preparing a proposed statute and career plan for teaching, integrating government, union and teachers, was considered a democratic advance, the final text of the draft law produced by the group was far from the national guidelines for developing career plans, especially with regard to working hours and the composition of remuneration, and did not constitute a real appreciation of teaching.
