This article is a clipping a master's academic research which aims to understand the challenges of the management process of an EAD polo of the Open University System of Brazil (UAB), with a view to implementing distance education in the west of Pará. The methodology was constructed through a case study, with qualitative approach and documentary, bibliographic and empirical research. The techniques of document analysis, non-participant observation and the questionnaire were used to produce the data, organized with the contribution of content analysis and the triangulation of methods. Based on the understanding that the EaD has an opportunity to join higher education to an increasing number of people, and the challenges to the management of an EaD polo, experienced by the coordinators working within the scope of the UAB System, the results found suggest that managing a UAB's polo in the interior of the Amazon has demanded several challenges for those who coordinate this type of education, among them evasion, which may be due to factors related to students' lack of knowledge about NICT, as well as the fragility of the training of presential tutors to act with this modality of teaching. Therefore, it should be concluded that the physical, technological and human resources infrastructure of the polo studied meets the proposed in its implementation, although there are challenges to be overcome by the polo managers and the offering IES, in order to guarantee a higher education for the interior of the Brazilian Amazon.
