Abstract

This article aims to track the actions and objectives developed between 2006 and 2017 by the “Núcleos de Estudos Afro-brasileiros” (NEABs) [Centers for Afro-Brazilian Studies], institutionalized in the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology (IFETs). We used Bardin (2016, p.127) as a methodological basis for the organization of the data and, for the discussions related to the NEABs, we refer to the specialized literature, through the works of Ratts (2011, p.36), Gomes (2012), Siss, Barreto and Oliveira, Santana, Coelho and Cardoso (2014), Fernandes (2014), Siss (2014), Rezende e Pereira (2015, p.93) and Marques and Silva (2016). Based on the collected data, we conclude that the actions developed by the NEABs in the IFETs contribute to the strengthening of affirmative action policies, especially regarding the teacher training processes for Ethnic-Racial Relations Education. However, in spite of the contributions of these centers, one of the challenges to overcome is the insertion of the actions aimed at the inclusion of racial themes in the school curriculum.
