Abstract

NEPOMUCENO, Izaíra Vasconcelos  and  TERRA, Bianca de Freitas. BIOLOGY AT PNLD 2018: what do we have about Caatinga?. Rev. Exitus [online]. 2020, vol.10, e020014.  Epub Mar 28, 2022. ISSN 2237-9460.  https://doi.org/10.24065/2237-9460.2020v10n0id1136.

Many textbooks still lack information about the Caatinga domain and reproduce myths about its biodiversity, ecological processes, and socioeconomic importance. On this, the aim of this study was to evaluate how the Caatinga Domain is approached in the Biology textbooks suggested by the 2018 Textbook National Program 2018 for High School. We analyzed 10 books proposed by PNLD for the Biology course. For the analysis, the following criteria were considered about Caatinga: Domain information, use of images, fauna, and flora. It was observed asymmetry related to space addressed to each “biome” in the textbook. However, most of the books correctly characterized the area of occurrence and physiognomy of the vegetation, in addition to using images. Contrary to what was thought, a considerable number of pages were assigned to the study of the Caatinga, thus guaranteeing, with the correct information and the use of visual texts, the broadening of knowledge about the main characteristics of that Domain.
