The article deepens the relationship between basic education and postgraduate studies in education, due to the common prospect of contributing to the improvement of basic education, and because it is little referenced. Its objective is to reveal the themes that constitute the object of study of graduate education in education when dealing with policies and management for basic education in a recent period, specifically between 2010 and 2020. This last decade was marked by intense debates and disputes around educational policies. The discussions around the National Education Plan and the multiple issues surrounding its implementation stand out. The survey and analysis of scientific production allow us to capture some of these movements, allowing us to place the production of a graduate program in the broader context of the area of education policy and management. For this purpose, the PPPGEdu/UFGD is chosen as a case of study, representative of the policies that make up the basic education-postgraduate focus. 65 productions were raised, being 60 Master's Dissertations and 5 Doctoral Theses in the Research Line “Policies and Management of Basic Education”. It was possible to observe a set of challenges for educational research, from the perspective of policy and management, at the international, national and local level, with the notification of problems still present in basic education, the focus of educational research in these spaces of asymmetric synthesis, being able to illuminate the decision processes for the improvement, still necessary, of basic education for all Brazilian regions.
