In this article, we present the results of a study that aimed to understand what characteristics are attributed to the autonomy of researchers in Education based on the theoretical framework of the area, to the point of organizing them to form an analysis instrument for future studies. To this end, we adopted bibliographic research and Content Analysis as methodological procedures, limited to articles published in Brazil on the CAPES Journal Portal in the last 32 years. The results allowed us to infer that the analyzed framework characterized the autonomy of researchers in Education based on the activities that these professionals carried out in their training and professional practice processes, under the presence and absence of interest and freedom, in relationships that involved ethics, skills and political dispositions, knowledge itself, and, in some situations, the exercise of teaching. Among other interpretations, we concluded that the data that comprised the publications studied presented descriptive quality and that the analytical instrument we developed demonstrated potential for analyzing autonomy in different contexts in which researchers work. Finally, we consider the training and work of educational researchers today and directions for future studies.
