This article aims to understand the senses and the importance of permanence in the student policy of the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), with regard to material and symbolic issues. The study starts from the following problematization: To what extent do the material actions that make up the Student Policy of UFAL dialogue with the symbolic dimension of permanence? Methodologically, it was organized around the qualitative approach, with a focus on bibliographic research and also resorted to the assumptions of the documentary analysis technique. The official documents analyzed demonstrated intersectorality through the interrelation of different programs that aim to subsidize the student's trajectory at the university, seeking to guarantee financial and pedagogical support, in order to establish a dialogue between material and symbolic issues, which denote that the university is concerned with the effective permanence of students.
