Abstract

TEIXEIRA, Giselle Baptista  and  SCHUELER, Alessandra Frota de. Livros para a escola primária carioca no século XIX: Produção, circulação e adoção de textos escolares de professores. Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2009, vol.09, n.02, pp.137-164. ISSN 2238-0094.

In this article we present some results of the research about the production, approval and adoption of books for the use of the carioca elementary public schools in the second half of the Nineteenth century. In the analysis we privileged, especially, the elementary teachers’ actuation as authors and/or texts translators. We support the hypothesis that these teachers, men and women, stood out because of their actuation as city and teaching intellectuals. Intellectuals that, fulfilling and disputing the author-function, participated in the production of knowledge, texts, materials and school books, interfering in the configuration of the school culture in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Keywords : School Books; Teachers Authors; Elementary Teaching; Rio de Janeiro; Nineteenth Century.
