Abstract

SILVA, Carlos Manique da. O modelo de escola graduada e a expansão da rede escolar no município de Lisboa (1881-1892). Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2012, vol.12, n.02, pp.15-44. ISSN 2238-0094.

This article seeks to register the political visibility of the graded school on a popular education project frame born under the aegis of masons republicans. What is being discussed, in particular, are the reasons which determined, during the first great experience of decentralization of education in Portugal (1881-1892), the identification of educational policy in the city of Lisbon with the new administrative and pedagogical organization. A strong feature in the graded school is that of the capacity of giving an effective answer concerning the education of a large number of children. Moreover, the author associates the new model of school organization to the rise of a qualified teacher’s class, which is essential for understanding the graded school as an organic community; that credits, basically, the idea of specialization, something that has to do with the scientific development of pedagogy and the pedagogical knowledge shared within a community of experts.

Keywords : Graded School; Decentralization of Education; Pedagogical Renewal; Portugal.
