In this work, we concentrate on the thought of Aureliano Candido Tavares Bastos (1839-1875) relating to public instruction from, in particular, their performance at A Província and its consequences in shaping a public space in Brazil consists of elements more democratic. For this, we rely on categories: intellectual, elementary structures of sociability, microclimate and network to analyze the processes of production and circulation of ideas about this intellectual change, social reform and the constitution of the space public in Brazil. We treat your diagnosis as key reading for understanding the role of education and reorganization of education in the country's participation in modernity. From the analysis of the main sources selected, their work and their interpreters, hence derive important aspects to think about the place of education in the context of moviment of ideas that period and the role of these for the subject in question in question, which, from our point of view, is fundamentally rooted in category freedom.
