Abstract

FRADE, Isabel Cristina Alves da Silva  and  GALVAO, Ana Maria de Oliveira. Instruments and supports for writing: between prescribed and non-conventional uses (Brazil, first half of the 20th century). Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2016, vol.16, n.1, pp.297-334. ISSN 2238-0094.  https://doi.org/10.4025/rbhe.v16i1.775.3.

The article analyzed the uses of writing instruments and supports by ordinary people during the schooling process, in the first half of the 20th century in the State of Minas Gerais. We used testimonies, via written and oral reports, as the main source. The research was theoretically and methodologically based on studies conducted by cultural history, history of written culture and history of school material culture. The analysis showed that the materiality of instruments and supports is a central and defining element of the uses that are made, and that there is a relative distance between the writing that the school wants to establish and the tactics that groups or individuals invent in their daily lives with the resources available.

Keywords : Writing Instruments and Supports; Written Culture; Schooling. 20th Century.
