The article aimed to analyze educational practices in the rural black community of Morro Alto, on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul. The community is currently a claimant of the titling of its lands as a ‘remnant of quilombos’. The period of the mid-twentieth century is focused, regarding the teaching process (from the trajectory of three teachers), and the learning process by children who have managed to attend school. In addition to the aforementioned aspects, it is studied the ‘self-writing’ of those who have learned to read and have written records about their personal or group experience, understanding them as constituents of subjectivities. Itis hypothesized that access to formal education was an opportunity for social advancement, but above all a mechanism for the empowerment of black women who have used the teaching authority they have acquired as a means of combating racism and consequent school dropout.
