Abstract: The purpose of the article is to analyze two school textbooks in the learning processes, as a reader, of a non-educated individual, born in 1921, considering the relationship established between the reading protocols and the meanings produced in the texts provided to be read. It refers to textbooks called Noções de história do Brasil (Concepts of history of Brazil), by Afonso Guerreiro Lima, and Geographia elementar (Elementary geography), by Theodoro de Souza Lobo. The carrying out of the interviews and the analysis of the written documents enabled the understanding that in the path of this individual, the influence of childhood textbooks is quite significant. In these books he acquired basic knowledge and organized key concepts which, combined with sociocultural experiences he faced, guided his reading, writing and production of meanings.
