Abstract

ABRAMOWSKI, Ana Laura. Teacher affection: Sentimental narrative, emotional work and affective atmospheres in the teaching profession in Argentina (1920-1940). Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2018, vol.18, e019.  Epub Mar 01, 2018. ISSN 2238-0094.  https://doi.org/10.4025/rbhe.v18.2018.e019.

Abstract: This study is the result of a research that analyzes teacher affection among primary school teachers in Argentina (1870-1970). Especially focused on the period 1920-1940, this article will attempt to establish a link between some concepts - such as romantic love, emotional work and affective atmospheres - and the selected corpus. Using the notion of ‘teacher sentimental narrative’ as a starting point, this study sought to understand the emotional frame which pervades the teaching profession. On the other hand, it is apparent that the cultivation of teacher affection pursues certain goals not only related to students’ discipline but also to their learning achievements. Lastly, the chosen period’s interest in ‘pedagogical tactfulness’ gives room for the exploration of barely-defined affective keys, which seek to propel the educational enterprise.

Keywords : teacher affection; romantic love; affective atmospheres; sentimental narrative; pedagogical tactfulness; emotional work.
