Abstract: In order to visualize the installation of the first institutions of higher education in the former state of Mato Grosso, it was necessary to look at the changes that occurred in the educational field occurred in the national context. The discussion, based on bibliographical research of memorialist and academic works, seeks to focus on the experiences of construction of higher education institutions in the state of Mato Grosso in the 1960s and reaches the period of state division in 1977. In this way, we present an information grid that allows us to understand the process of creation of the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso and the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul. The southern portion of the former Mato Grosso was very dynamic than the northern part in the promotion of the first schools of higher education. The institutionalization of higher education schools occurred in a national context that favored their internalization process, these schools led by local leaders, liberal professionals who used the discourse to promote regional modernization, with the objective of to acquire power and recognition with initiatives undertaken in the educational field. Already the role of the university system was, essentially, a premium of the local manpower.
