This paper focuses on the special role of school material culture in the analyses of Brazilian education historiography since the 1990´s. Researches on history of school material culture are analyzed and four aspects were examined: Firstly, school architecture, secondly, school archives and library, then audiovisual material and finally the main changes in historiographical sensibility of studies about the history of Brazilian education. It highlights the relevance this theme to studies about school practices and to historiography of education. In this paper, we sought to reflect on some challenges in educational memory and in research in history of education.
