Abstract

ROMANO, Antonio. The dilemmas in citizen formation. Between civic education and military training in the processes of political emancipation in the 19th century in Uruguay. Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2020, vol.20, e124.  Epub Aug 01, 2020. ISSN 2238-0094.  https://doi.org/10.4025/rbhe.v20.2020.e124.

The historiography of education in Uruguay has not taken the importance of the contradictions in the process of constitution of the baccalaureate that was taught at the Universidad de la República in the 19th century. The lack of mention of military instruction that was included in the secondary education program in 1887 is outstanding in a time time when the Baccalaureate curriculum in Sciences and Arts was consolidated. Paradoxically the militaristic cycle was already in the final phase. The objective of this article is to analyze the arguments that justify this late inclusion of military training in university and teachers formation, based on a research that combines institutional and personal documentations.

Keywords : school battalions; clasic baccalaureate; military training.
