The paper describes this concept and propose its confrontation with the historical reality of the Brazilian territory’s formation, specifically around the mining district, in the mines of Serro do Frio (Vila do Príncipe, capital of the Serro do Frio County, currently the city of Serro/MG). For that, the notion of document as consultation processes written in sacred letters is introduced in order to let talkthe absent ones, responsible for conducting the control procedures of the Portuguese Crown in his kingdom and its colonies, based on some arguments by António Manuel Hespanha, in particular the Regiments. The methodology is limited to bibliographic research of Portuguese and Brazilian archives’ documents, as well as the dialogue of thought with historians. The result achieved is offer a foundation for the historical educational narrative, especially for the revelation of the education’s role - formal or informal - in the reading and writing of Brazilian colonial history.
