This is article result of analysis of the formative trajectory of Maria Amélia Cavalcanti de Albuquerque (1854-1934), the first doctor from Pernambuco, graduated for a Brazilian medical scholl, in 1892. Through of bibliographical and documentary research, the investigation revealed paths, studies, formative routes, problems of to be a woman, beyond the educational opportunities used. Far from a story of oppressor versus oppressed, what was sought was the approximation of a writing of history that values the performance of women starling formative elements of a historical period that combine family tradition, economic power, relationship networks, public subsidy, in addition to the willingness to face an androcentric society that was not impeded, it hindered any kind of female ascension.
