Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Fernando Rodrigues de. Between the New School and Basic School: curriculum modernization for the teaching of portuguese in primary education in São Paulo (1949-1968). Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2022, vol.22, e232.  Epub Sep 01, 2022. ISSN 2238-0094.  https://doi.org/10.4025/rbhe.v22.2022.e232.

In order to discuss how the prescriptions for teaching the Portuguese language were associated with projects for the formation of the people and ideals of Education, this article focuses on the programs published between 1949 and 1968 in São Paulo, resulting from two curriculum reforms from primary school. Based on the contributions of the History of Curriculum, the analysis of these programs indicates that the modernization of the curriculum for teaching Portuguese implemented in São Paulo in the period studied was marked by the permanence of the philosophical and conceptual principle of understanding the language. However, it corresponded to an important break with the school culture shaped by the republican ideal, marking the intent of the basic school founded on technical-instrumental reason.

Keywords : portuguese language; primary school; prescriptions for teaching; curriculum.
