Abstract

CELESTE FILHO, Macioniro. The authoritarian New School proposed in the early days of the Estado Novo in Portugal. Rev. Bras. Hist. Educ [online]. 2022, vol.22, e238.  Epub Oct 01, 2022. ISSN 2238-0094.  https://doi.org/10.4025/rbhe.v22.2022.e238.

In 1934, at the beginning of the Estado Novo in Portugal, it was proposed to implement the New School in Portuguese schools. The concept of this New School was then instrumentalized to adapt to an authoritarian regime, in a process of consolidation in that country. An authoritarian New School was then conceived. The purpose of this article is to contextually present the campaign for New School published by the newspaper Diário da Manhã, an organ of the Salazar regime. The methodology used was that of research and document analysis, having as a privileged source the editorials on the subject published in the Diário da Manhã. The aim of this work is to understand and elucidate the authoritarian resignification processes that the ideas of New School had at the beginning of the Estado Novo in Portugal.

Keywords : history of education; education and authoritarianism; New School in Portugal.
